2018 April – In the Studio

In the Studio

A great organization in Renton called Cry Out lets youth get in the recording studio and encourages them to come up with songs/raps that help them process the hard times they have been through. MUST recently spent a couple hours in the studio ‘spittin’ out bars’. Click Here to Listen to the track that they made for us. Warning that there are some explicit lyrics. We also used the studio time to talk to our youth about how they view women. Separate warning, if you listen carefully you can hear a certain Executive Director pontificate if he will kiss his baby son Charlie a million times in his life. The ‘cut’ is sure to sweep the nation… and greatly embarrass his sons. Enjoy!

Both of the pictures above are of Toree. The top, in the studio, is 2018 and the bottom is 2013. Toree was part of the original cohort of 5 youth that started with MUST in 2012. We are watching that first cohort very carefully and trying to learn as much as we can from them. What did we do well? What would we do differently? Toree would have dropped out of high school if not for MUST. He is now in his second year of college and is just now starting to get his feet under him in that environment. He also wants to become a mentor for MUST. It is super exciting for us to see it come full circle with Toree. He is one of the most courageous and persistent guys we know.

Worlds Collide

“I ain’t never been on a mountain before. I ain’t never been on a mountain before,” repeatedly said by a MUST youth with a little excitement and genuine fear in his voice. “Glazing pottery?!” a new MUST member will often say. “That was a lot more fun than I thought it would be,” the same teen says after the event. One generous donor paid for our inner-tubing trip this year and each year we glaze pottery in University Village. It is a big win when our youth are in places they would not normally be, around people they would not normally be around and enjoying themselves. Their worlds expand when worlds collide. Seeing our ‘rough’ bunch of guys in these places makes us proud of their adventurous spirits.
